You may have got one as a hand me down from a family member or passed onto you from a friend.

So what do you do now, how does this thing work?

I will share with you 5 tips that will help you get started using your

1. Take the camera out of automatic mode

Yes the camera always takes the photo in this mode, the flash pops open and the camera snaps the shot. This is fine and dandy for just documenting something, but not with any artistic control. That older film SLR might not even have an automatic mode. There is no harm in playing around with settings, experiment with the result. Learn by doing.

2. Put that camera into manual mode, no auto focus no automatic flash

Taking that camera out of automatic mode lets you control how the camera works and how the shot is exposed. This mode is best for experimenting with the functions of the camera. You will quickly see what effects your changes have. Using the viewfinder, you can focus with the ring on the lens and select specific objects to focus on in the frame. Exposure is now in your control as well. If in a brightly lit room or outdoors your flash is pretty much useless and will cause hard shadows to appear on your subject.

3. Learn about exposure

There are two things that control how your frame is exposed. F-stop and shutter speed. F-stop is a measure of how much light the lens will let in. Lower the f-stop number the greater amount of light is let in. Shutter speed is how fast the shutter will fire. A faster shutter speed requires more light, it also allows for greater sharpness when the camera is hand held or the subject is moving fast.

4. Start with film

If you don't have one already, try and gain access to a film SLR or even point and shoot. Using a film camera will help you learn to slow down and compose your shot. With film you have a finite number of frames and you want to make the most of each one. There is no instant preview, so thinking about light and exposure will be part of your shooting process as well. If you do take your photography hobby further, this will help speed up your shoots. You can visualize the final product without a large amount of trial and error.

5. Take a photography class

There is no better way to learn then by doing. Join a class or photography club and learn from your fellow shooters. Like any craft, practice makes perfect.
